What I’ve been reading: Muse Maker

I just became friends with a writer named Matt Mic and have really been enjoying his work. He’s a young digital nomad hanging out in Argentina making a living writing online.

Muse Makermusings on internet biz & life

No one cares. Your old classmates scroll by your content and move on with their days. Most of them don't even care enough to make fun of you.

This is great news. Let me explain why.

You now have full permission to stop giving a fuck about the opinions of irrelevant people and start focusing on creating bangers. Yes, it’s an absolute certainty that there will be people who shit on your content. But haters are actually the minority. Most people will just scroll by.

Most people have better things to do than judge you and gossip about you. “Remember that anyone who is secretly making fun of you is just a sad jealous lonely loser who hates their job, life, is having no sex, and will die horrendously empty and unfulfilled,” wrote Nat Eliason only somewhat jokingly. “Why would you care if they’re making fun of you? If anything, you should pity them.”

With this in mind, I stopped giving a fuck about people who shit on my work. I had a couple TikToks go viral this week and got hit with some hate comments. I just hit them back with 😂. I finally accepted I’ll never be loved by everyone. There will always be haters. All I can do is do me, make work that makes me happy, and have fun. So I’ve embraced my cyberpunk nerdy brand even more.

Last week, a marketing guy over at a16z (vc firm Andreessen Horowitz) introduced me to a founder so I could help them out with content writing. The intro email captured me and my brand so well I had to make it my Twitter bio.

My new bio and cover photo

I debated making it my bio for a week because I didn’t want to come across as too “tech-bro”. But then I realized that the stronger and more polarizing my brand, the better. Twitter bios are magnets. If the bio repels people, that means it’ll be attracting others harder as well. It’s the same thing as starting each blog with “sup nerds.” So I may lose out on some of the non-tech folks, but I’ll win over my people.

As Mac Miller rapped, “I give a fuck less and less everyday, the more you give a fuck, I guess the less you make”. I’m making more money and content than I ever have in my life. It’s beautiful. When you stop giving a fuck about irrelevant people, you can start attacking the algorithm with all your energy.

Attacking the Algorithm

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck isn’t about learning how to not give a fuck about life. It’s about how we can’t give a fuck about everything, so we must selectively choose the things we give a fuck and don’t give a fuck about.

When you choose your career as a creator over other people’s thoughts and opinions, the fear goes away. You stop procrastinating writing that blog post or making that TikTok. You stop making excuses. You start making bangers. You start putting out loads of content. You start destroying the algorithm.

I’m stealing the phrase “Attack the algorithm” from creator Zach Pogrob who realized no one really cared, started attacking the algorithm, and grew his following to almost 2 million across platforms.

When you focus on attacking the algorithm, you realize:

  • It doesn’t matter if people scroll by and don’t give a shit

  • It doesn’t matter if people make fun of you

  • It doesn’t matter if 99.99% of people don’t like your work

All of these people all irrelevant to your career. You don’t need them. Stop giving a fuck about them. Focus on the people who matter.

First and foremost, focus on making yourself happy. I changed my TikTok bio to “Making myself laugh” to remind myself my primary purpose for being on there is to have fun making goofy videos.

Once you’re happy, then focus on making your supporters happy. You’ll never make all the haters and lurkers happy so fuck them. All you need are 1,000 true fans paying $10/month for you to make $10,000/month. 100,000 people can hate your work, but if you find 1,000 people who love your work, you’re making almost 2x the average salary in America.

If you attack the algorithm (and make a lot of online friends), the algorithm will find people who love your work. You just need to make so much 🔥 content the algorithm can't ignore you. So forget about the haters. They can go fuck themselves. Don't stress, attack the algorithm.

Creators Corner

3 things that helped me be a better creator this week:

📘 After I saw Elon tweet about it, I read Daemon by Daniel Suarez. It’s a sci-fi AGI thriller. I couldn’t put it down and it’s got my mind spinning.

🎶 I’ve been listening to Calvin Harris’s Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 on repeat. Listen while driving with the windows down. You won’t regret it.

🐝 I send this newsletter via Beehiiv, the greatest newsletter platform in the world. Here’s what a friend and author said about switching.

Thanks for reading nerds.

Create some cool shit this week.
